TOEFL reading tips for high score that actually helped me

TOEFL reading tips for high score are usually super generic, so I made a short list of what actually helped me stop losing points on easy questions.

  • Read the first paragraph carefully, then move faster. It usually gives the main idea and tone.
  • Don’t read like it’s a novel. I started skimming for structure: cause/effect, contrast, examples, definitions.
  • Do vocab in context first. Don’t overthink the hardest meaning of the word.
  • For detail questions, hunt keywords in the passage instead of rereading everything.
  • On summary questions, eliminate half-true choices. Those killed my score early on.

Biggest tip: practice with a timer, but review why each wrong answer is wrong. That part improved my reading way more than just doing more sets.
