TOEFL reading tips for high score - what actually helped me

TOEFLTOEFLreadingstudy tipshigh score

TOEFL reading tips for high score felt super generic to me until I started changing how I practiced, not just how much. I was stuck in the low 20s, and the biggest difference was learning to read for structure instead of trying to understand every single word.

What helped me most:

  • skim the first sentence of each paragraph and note the main job of that paragraph
  • do the easy detail questions first, then come back to inference/vocab
  • stop rereading whole passages; force yourself to use the question keywords
  • review wrong answers by asking why the correct one is right, not just why yours was wrong

Also, timing got better when I accepted that I do not need a perfect first read. Once I treated the passage like a map, my score jumped from 22 to 28 on practice tests.

If anyone wants, I can share the little note-taking format I used on scrap paper.
