TOEFL vs IELTS which is easier? the tip that helped me choose

Last month I was stuck in the exact TOEFL vs IELTS which is easier spiral and wasting way too much time watching comparison videos. What finally helped was stopping the general debate and comparing the test format to my own weak spots.

My tip: don’t ask “which exam is easier?” Ask “which exam feels more natural for the way I already speak, listen, and write in English?”

Here’s the quick checklist I used:

  • Speaking: TOEFL = speaking into a microphone. IELTS = talking to a real person. If live conversation stresses you out less, IELTS might feel easier. If you hate face-to-face pressure, TOEFL might be better.
  • Listening: TOEFL lectures are longer and more academic. IELTS felt a bit more varied to me. If your focus drops during long lectures, notice that.
  • Writing: TOEFL integrated tasks are very specific. IELTS writing can feel more open-ended. Some people love structure, some don’t.
  • Reading: TOEFL passages felt denser to me, but IELTS question types sometimes felt trickier.

The thing that made the decision way easier was doing one full practice section of each test instead of reading opinions online. My score difference was small, but my stress level was not. That told me more than any “TOEFL vs IELTS easier” thread.

So my actual advice: choose the test that matches your comfort under pressure, not the one people online call easier in general. “Easier” usually just means better fit.
