I kept searching for TOEFL writing task 2 tips because my essays always sounded “okay” to me, but I was losing points for being vague and all over the place. The biggest change wasn’t fancy vocabulary. It was finally learning how to make task 2 feel predictable.
What helped me most was using the same simple structure every time:
- Intro = paraphrase the question + clear opinion
- Body 1 = first reason + one specific example
- Body 2 = second reason + one specific example
- Conclusion = restate opinion in different words
Before that, I would start writing whatever came to mind and end up repeating myself. Once I forced myself into 4 paragraphs, my ideas got way cleaner.
A few practical tips that actually worked for me:
- Choose 2 reasons only. Not 3, not 4. If you try to cover too much, your examples get weak. Two solid reasons is enough.
- Make your opinion obvious. Don’t be half-half unless the question really asks for a balanced view. A clear position is easier to support.
- Use specific but simple examples. They do not need to be academic or “smart.” Even everyday examples work if they clearly support your point.
- Stop forcing advanced words. I used to throw in random formal vocabulary and sometimes used it wrong. Simple and accurate is better.
- Write topic sentences first. If Body 1 and Body 2 each have one strong first sentence, the rest becomes easier.
This was my basic planning method, and it only took like 3 minutes:
- Write my opinion in 1 sentence
- Write reason 1 in 5-7 words
- Write example 1 in 5-7 words
- Write reason 2 in 5-7 words
- Write example 2 in 5-7 words
Something else that improved my score: I started checking for the same 4 mistakes every single time at the end.
- Did I answer the exact question?
- Did I clearly state my opinion?
- Did each paragraph have one main idea?
- Did I make grammar mistakes from writing too fast?
If you want a super safe template, this is close to what I used:
Introduction: Many people believe that ___, while others think ___. I believe that ___ because ___ and ___.
Body paragraph: First, ___. This is because ___. For example, ___. As a result, ___.
Conclusion: In conclusion, although this issue has different sides, I believe ___ for the reasons above.
I know templates get criticized, but honestly, for TOEFL they helped me stay organized. The key is not copying them robotically. Just use them as a frame and put real ideas inside.
Also, one underrated thing: practice under time pressure. When I only practiced slowly, I felt confident, but in the real test I panicked. Doing even 2 or 3 timed essays per week made a huge difference.
