What I Learned Building My First High School Resume

So, I decided to apply for my first job this summer, and wow, crafting a resume was a bit more challenging than I expected. I mean, I’ve got a million things I could put down, but figuring out what actually matters was tough. I wanted to share my experience in hopes it helps some of you who are in the same boat!

First off, keep in mind that most employers at this level are not expecting a ton of experience. They really want to see your volunteer work, any classes you excelled in, and of course, any special skills you might have. I started by making a simple list of all the activities I did during high school—clubs, sports, even a couple of honors classes.

I focused a lot on relevant achievements. For instance, I was part of the student council and helped organize a charity event. That showed leadership skills and teamwork. Trust me, those kinds of experiences are priceless when you’re just starting.

Next, I added a section on skills. I included things like computer skills (if you know Microsoft Office or Google Docs, definitely mention that) and any foreign languages. Don’t underestimate how important those little things can be!

And don’t forget about hobbies! I briefly mentioned my love for coding and graphic design. It makes you more relatable and can spark conversations during interviews.

Lastly, I made sure to keep the whole thing clean and tidy. A simple format is best. I’ve seen classmates go all out with colors and designs, but often, less is more. Just one or two colors and a readable font go a long way.

So yeah, crafting my first resume took some time, but breaking it down into sections made it way easier. It might feel overwhelming, but just remember to highlight your strengths! Good luck to everyone, and feel free to drop any questions or share your own tips!
