Last semester, I felt completely lost when it came to asking my professor for a letter of recommendation. I really wanted to make the process easier for them, but I didn’t know what to include. After some digging and asking around, I found some tips that really helped me, and I thought I’d share.
First off, it’s super helpful to give your recommender a brief overview of your goals. What programs are you applying to? Why are you interested in them? A short paragraph about your future aspirations can set the tone for the letter.
- Resume/CV: Send them a copy of your resume or a list of your accomplishments, internship experiences, and any relevant activities. This gives them a clearer picture of your achievements.
- Personal statement: If you have a draft of your personal statement, share it! It can help them tailor the letter to reflect your goals and voice.
- Deadline details: Make sure they know when the letter is due and how to submit it, whether it's online or via email.
