what to pack for college dorm: what I brought, what I regret, what I actually used

What to pack for college dorm was weirdly one of the most stressful parts of moving for me, because every packing list online made it sound like I needed to bring my entire life. I was coming in as a student trying to be prepared, and I still ended up with way too much stuff in some categories and not enough in others.

The biggest thing I learned is that dorm rooms are small. Like, much smaller than they look in university photos. I brought extra decor, too many clothes, and random “just in case” items that stayed in drawers all semester.

What I actually used every single week:

  • bedding that fit the dorm mattress
  • a mattress topper because the bed was honestly terrible without it
  • shower shoes and a small shower caddy
  • two towels, not five
  • laundry bag and detergent pods
  • a power strip with a long cord
  • basic school supplies
  • headphones
  • a water bottle
  • slippers
  • some medicine for headaches, colds, and allergies

The medicine part saved me more than once. Getting sick in the first month while also figuring out classes is not fun, and I really didn’t want to run around searching for everything while feeling awful.

Stuff I’m glad I packed even though it felt boring:

  • copies of important documents
  • a few photos from home
  • one small lamp because dorm lighting can feel so harsh
  • cleaning wipes
  • extra charging cables
  • a little storage basket for snacks and random items

That last one helped a lot because clutter builds up fast in a shared room. If you have a roommate, every bit of organization matters more than you think.

Stuff I regret bringing:

  • too many shoes
  • too many winter clothes before I even knew the weather situation
  • full-size bottles of everything
  • extra notebooks I never touched
  • kitchen stuff I assumed I would use all the time

I had this fantasy that I’d be making full meals constantly. In reality, I used a mug, a bowl, a spoon, and maybe one container for leftovers. That was basically enough for my actual dorm life.

One thing that helped me a lot was not trying to pack for the whole year at once. If you can, bring the essentials first and then figure out what you really need after two or three weeks. Once I lived in the room, it became obvious what was missing. Before that, I was just guessing.

Also, check your dorm rules carefully. Some things people put on every “what to pack for college dorm” list might not even be allowed in your building. I nearly brought items my dorm would have made me remove on day one.

If I had to give the simplest version of my packing advice, it would be this: pack for sleeping, showering, studying, laundry, and getting through your first sick day. Everything else is easier to buy later than to overpack now.

I seriously thought moving in successfully meant bringing a lot. It turned out it was more about bringing the right things and leaving space for yourself to settle in.
