what’s your best SAT practice test strategy that actually improved scores?

What’s the best SAT practice test strategy that actually moves your score up, not just burns 3 hours on a Saturday? I kept searching that exact phrase because taking full tests over and over was making me feel productive, but my score barely changed. What finally helped was being way more intentional with each practice test.

Here’s the SAT practice test routine that worked better for me:

  1. Take one full test under real timing
Phone away, Bluebook only, short breaks, no music. I needed at least one “honest” score each week.

  2. Spend more time reviewing than testing
I started doing around 2-3 hours of review for every full test. That was the biggest difference.

  3. Sort every missed question into 3 buckets

    • Content gap = I didn’t know the concept

    • Process mistake = rushed, skipped steps, bad calculator use

    • Trap answer = I understood it but got baited

  4. Keep a tiny error log
Not a giant spreadsheet, just question type, why I missed it, and what I’ll do next time. Example: percent word problem - picked answer too fast - underline what is actually being asked

  5. Redo missed questions 2 days later
If I still missed them, that told me the lesson didn’t stick.

  6. Use section drills between full tests
If one practice test showed I was weak at transitions or hard algebra, I drilled only that for the next few days.

A quick rule I wish I followed earlier:

Don’t take another full SAT practice test until you know why the last one went wrong.

Also, for Reading/Writing, I improved faster when I stopped obsessing over doing extra passages and instead reviewed why each wrong answer was wrong. For Math, careless mistakes mattered almost as much as content.

If anyone has a better SAT practice test strategy, especially for breaking through a score plateau, please drop it. I feel like the review method matters way more than the number of tests.
