when to apply early decision vs early action - cheat sheet I made

Anyone else overthinking when to apply early decision vs early action? I was, so I made myself a super simple decision guide and it honestly cleared things up.

Here’s the version I’d give a friend:

  • Apply Early Decision (ED) if you have a clear first-choice school, you’d 100% attend if admitted, and the net price calculator looks realistic for your family.
  • Apply Early Action (EA) if you want an early result without being locked in, especially if you’re still comparing schools, scholarships, or aid packages.
  • Avoid ED if you need to compare financial aid offers in a serious way. This was the biggest factor for me.
  • Use EA strategically for schools where getting materials in early might help, but you still want options later.

A few things that helped me decide:

  1. First-choice test: If you got into both your ED school and another favorite in March, would you still pick the ED school without hesitation?
  2. Money test: Did you run the school’s net price calculator, and does that number feel doable?
  3. Profile test: Is your application strongest now, or would waiting for new grades/test scores help?

My basic rule became: ED is for certainty, EA is for flexibility.

One warning: people talk a lot about an “ED boost,” but I wouldn’t choose ED just for that. If the school isn’t truly your top choice or the cost could become a problem, that boost can be overrated.

Quick shortcut: if your dream school is affordable and truly your #1, ED makes sense. If you still have academic, financial, or emotional uncertainty, EA is usually safer.

That framing helped me way more than all the vague advice online.
