when to apply early decision vs early action if aid matters?

Admissionsearly decisionearly actionfinancial aidapplication strategy

Last night I was supposed to be drafting supplements and somehow ended up spiraling over when to apply early decision vs early action instead. I get the basic rules, but the strategy part is confusing me.

My top choice is a reach, and I would need pretty solid financial aid to make it work. That makes ED feel risky even if there might be an admissions boost. EA seems safer, but then I keep wondering if I am wasting my best shot by not using ED.

For people who already went through this, how did you decide? Did you only apply ED if the net price calculator looked really solid, or are there other things I should be weighing here?
