When's the right time to ask for a recommendation letter?

So, I’m in a bit of a dilemma and could really use your advice. I’m applying for a few internships and graduate programs, and I know I need some solid recommendation letters. But when exactly is the right time to ask for them?

Here’s my situation: I don’t want to seem too pushy or last-minute, but I also don’t want to ask too early where it feels like I’m just assuming I’ll get in. Plus, I want to give my recommenders ample time to write thoughtful letters.

Last semester, I had a professor who really appreciated the work I did in class and I think they’d back me up, but it feels like I should probably ask now, right? Or should I wait until I have my applications ready to go?

If anyone has some experience with this or can share what worked for them, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
