Local authorities have to choose how to spend their education budgets. Some people think adult learning centres should receive more money, while others would prefer improvements to children’s schools. In my opinion, schools should be the first priority, although adult education should also receive some support.
There are several reasons to invest in schools. Children need basic skills such as reading and mathematics before they can continue their education. If a school has too many pupils in each class, teachers have less time to help students who find the lessons difficult. More funding could provide extra teachers and better materials. For example, a school could open another class so that children receive more attention. These improvements would benefit children for many years, which makes them a useful investment.
Adult learning centres are also important because people sometimes need to change their careers. A worker who loses a job may not have the computer skills required by other employers. An affordable local course could help this person apply for a new job. Centres can also provide language classes for people who have moved to a new country. However, it is important to check whether there is enough demand for these courses. A centre with very few learners may cost a lot without helping many people.
To conclude, both schools and adult learning centres can improve people’s opportunities. I believe local governments should first make sure that schools have enough teachers and basic resources. After meeting these needs, they should fund adult courses that are clearly useful for the local community. This would allow children to have a good start while giving adults a chance to improve their lives.
