The provided graph illustrates the changes in urban population percentages in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia from 1970 to 2040, with projections for 2030 and 2040. Overall, it is noticeable that there has been a consistent upward trend in urban population percentages in all four countries over the 50-year period. By 2040, Malaysia is projected to have the highest proportion of people living in cities, at approximately 83%, while Indonesia is expected to rank second at around 64%. The Philippines and Thailand are forecast to reach roughly 56% and 50%, respectively.
Malaysia rises from about 30% in 1970 to 60% in 2000, then continues upward, though more gradually, reaching just over 80% by 2040. Indonesia also grows throughout, from around 13% to 30% between 1970 and 2000 before climbing more sharply to about 64% at the end.
The Philippines starts at approximately 30% and reaches a peak of just under 50% in 1990. Its figure then falls to the low 40s by 2010, before recovering to around 56% in 2040. Thailand remains the least urbanised for most of the period, increasing from about 18% in 1970 to 30% in 1990 and changing only slightly until 2020. It then rises to approximately 50% by 2040.
