The graph illustrates the proportions of people living in urban areas in four different countries in Asia between 1970 and 2020, along with projections for 2030 and 2040. Overall, it is evident that all four nations experienced an upward trend and Malaysia stood out as having the highest percentage among the group. These patterns are particularly clear in Malaysia and Indonesia, whose figures rose substantially, while Thailand remained the lowest for most of the period. In 1970, the Philippines and Malaysia were both at about 30%, compared with roughly 18% in Thailand and 13% in Indonesia. Malaysia then climbed sharply, reaching around 60% in 2000 and 70% in 2010, and is projected to exceed 80% by 2040. Indonesia rose more gradually to about 30% in 2000, before accelerating; it overtook the Philippines at around 2010 and is forecast to reach approximately 64% in 2040. The Philippines peaked at just under 50% in 1990, then declined to the low 40s by 2010 before recovering to the mid-50s by 2040. Thailand increased to around 30% in 1990 and stayed in the low 30s until 2020, after which it is expected to rise to 50%. Consequently, the forecasts leave Malaysia well ahead, while Indonesia and the Philippines finish at intermediate levels and Thailand remains lowest.
