The graph illustrates the proportions of people residing in cities in four different Asian countries between 1970 and 2020, along with the foresee in 2030 and 2040. Overall, all four nations experienced an upward trend and are expected to reach the peak in the end. The percentage of both Malaysia and the Philippines started at about 30% in 1970, whereas Indonesia and Thailand were lower, at roughly 13% and 18%, respectively. Malaysia’s figure increased steadily throughout the period, reaching around 60% in 2000 and approximately 83% by 2040, the highest level shown. The Philippines rose to just under 50% in 1990, before falling gradually to about 42% in 2010. It then recovered, and is forecast to reach roughly 56% in 2040. Indonesia also grew overall: its proportion climbed from around 13% to 30% between 1970 and 2000, then rose more quickly to about 43% in 2010 and is projected to finish at approximately 64%. Thailand increased more slowly for much of the period, moving from about 18% in 1970 to around one third in 2020. Its figure is predicted to rise to 50% by 2040. Thus, Malaysia remains highest in the later years, while Thailand is expected to have the lowest urban population share in 2040.
