Band 5.0

The line chart illustrates the amount of tourist that visited three different areas in a European country from 1987 to 2007. Overall, all these areas witnessed an increase in the number of visitors during this 20 years; for the coast and the lakes it was higher compared to the mountains where tourism slightly increased. The mountains received about 20,000 visitors in 1987, and this figure rose gradually to around 35,000 by 2007. It was the least popular area throughout the period. The coast began at approximately 40,000 visitors, fell slightly to 35,000 in 1992, and then climbed steadily, reaching 45,000 in 1997 and 60,000 in 2002. It ended at about 75,000, the highest figure among the three areas in 2007. The lakes started with only 10,000 visitors in 1987, but their numbers increased quickly to 30,000 in 1992 and 40,000 in 1997. They then rose sharply to a peak of about 75,000 in 2002, before falling to 50,000 at the end of the period. Thus, the lakes experienced the largest fluctuation, while the mountains had the smallest overall increase.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Write a one-sentence overview that identifies the coast’s and lakes’ substantial overall rises, the mountains’ smaller rise, and the lakes’ peak followed by a fall.
2
Check countable nouns and time phrases in the opening: use “number of tourists” and “over these 20 years.”
3
Compare the series using approximate values at shared years, especially the lakes’ 2002 peak of about 75,000 against the coast’s rise to about 75,000 in 2007.
