Ideas to explore

  • Renewables rose from 15.0% in 2014 to 26.2% in 2018, the most notable increase.
  • Coal fell from 28.4% to 18.1%, while nuclear declined slightly from 22.5% to 21.6%.
  • Gas remained the largest category at 30.1% in both years; Oil and Other stayed at 4.0%.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the two pie charts, the UK, the years and the percentage measure.
  2. Give an overview highlighting the main increase, the main decrease and stable categories.
  3. Compare the 2014 shares, grouping the larger sources before the smaller ones.
  4. Describe the 2018 figures and directly compare them with 2014.

Band 9.0

The pie chart illustrates the energy generation from five different types of fuel in two separate years, 2014 and 2018. In general, the proportion of energy manufactured from renewables experienced an upward trend, while coal and nuclear showed the reverse. Notably, energy generation from oil and other, as well as from gas remained stable throughout the period, at 4.0% and 30.1%, respectively. The most striking change was in renewables, whose share rose from 15.0% in 2014 to 26.2% in 2018, an increase of 11.2 percentage points. As a result, renewables became the second-largest source by 2018, overtaking coal and nuclear. Coal recorded the sharpest fall, declining from 28.4% to 18.1%, a drop of 10.3 percentage points. Nuclear also decreased, but only slightly, from 22.5% to 21.6%. Gas supplied 30.1% in both years and was the largest source in 2014 and 2018. Oil and Other made up the smallest share, unchanged at 4.0%. Overall, the figures show a shift away from coal and nuclear towards renewable energy, while the contributions of gas and Oil and Other were unchanged.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
In the overview, state the three principal patterns directly: renewables increased, coal and nuclear decreased, and gas and Oil and Other stayed level.
2
Use “percentage points” for differences between the chart percentages; for example, renewables rose by 11.2 percentage points.
3
Group the larger changes first, then report the two unchanged categories together, using the chart’s exact category labels.
