Ideas to explore

  • Renewables rose from 15.0% in 2014 to 26.2% in 2018, the most notable increase.
  • Coal fell from 28.4% to 18.1%, while nuclear declined slightly from 22.5% to 21.6%.
  • Gas remained the largest category at 30.1% in both years; Oil and Other stayed at 4.0%.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the two pie charts, the UK, the years and the percentage measure.
  2. Give an overview highlighting the main increase, the main decrease and stable categories.
  3. Compare the 2014 shares, grouping the larger sources before the smaller ones.
  4. Describe the 2018 figures and directly compare them with 2014.

Band 8.0

The pie charts compare the proportion of energy generated from five fuel sources, namely coal, gas, nuclear, renewables, and oil and other fuels in the UK from 2014 to 2018. Overall, the charts show noticeable shifts in energy production over the given period, with nuclear and coal fuels seeing declines, whereas the reverse was true of renewables, whose share rose substantially. In 2014, gas was the largest source, at 30.1%, closely followed by coal at 28.4%. Nuclear supplied 22.5%, while renewables accounted for 15%. Oil and other fuels made up the remaining 4%. By 2018, gas still contributed 30.1%, the highest proportion, while renewables had become the second-largest source at 26.2%. Nuclear output represented 21.6%, and coal fell to 18.1%. The share from oil and other fuels was unchanged at 4%. Across the period, renewables rose by 11.2 percentage points, the largest increase, whereas coal recorded the biggest fall, down 10.3 points. Nuclear declined only slightly by 0.9 points, and gas and oil and other fuels showed no change in their respective shares.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Use the overview to identify the unchanged categories as well as the main rises and falls; here, gas and oil and other fuels remain steady.
2
When comparing years, state the starting and ending percentages together, such as coal falling from 28.4% to 18.1%.
3
Use “percentage points” for differences between chart percentages, and avoid implying that the figures represent absolute energy quantities.
