Ideas to explore

  • Renewables rose from 15.0% in 2014 to 26.2% in 2018, the most notable increase.
  • Coal fell from 28.4% to 18.1%, while nuclear declined slightly from 22.5% to 21.6%.
  • Gas remained the largest category at 30.1% in both years; Oil and Other stayed at 4.0%.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the two pie charts, the UK, the years and the percentage measure.
  2. Give an overview highlighting the main increase, the main decrease and stable categories.
  3. Compare the 2014 shares, grouping the larger sources before the smaller ones.
  4. Describe the 2018 figures and directly compare them with 2014.

Band 8.0

The pie charts illustrates the percentage of energy generation by different types of fuels in the UK in two separate years: 2014 and 2018. Overall, the proportion of gas generation was the highest, while that of oil and other fuels was had the lowest figure throughout the period. In addition, the figure for nuclear and gas generation showed contrasting patterns. Gas remained steady at 30.1% in both years, whereas nuclear fell slightly from 22.5% in 2014 to 21.6% in 2018. Coal was the second-largest source in 2014, at 28.4%, but its share declined to 18.1% four years later. By contrast, renewables rose substantially from 15.0% to 26.2%, becoming the second-largest source in 2018. Oil and other fuels accounted for the smallest share, at 4.0% in each year. Overall, the energy mix shifted away from coal towards renewables, while gas remained unchanged and the figures for nuclear and oil and other fuels changed little or not at all.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Before writing the overview, identify the highest and lowest categories in both years; state that gas led in both years and oil and other fuels remained lowest.
2
Compare the two major changes together: renewables rose from 15.0% to 26.2%, while coal fell from 28.4% to 18.1%.
3
Proofread the introduction and overview for subject–verb agreement and duplicated verbs, then remove any concluding sentence that repeats the overview.
