Ideas to explore

  • Renewables rose from 15.0% in 2014 to 26.2% in 2018, the most notable increase.
  • Coal fell from 28.4% to 18.1%, while nuclear declined slightly from 22.5% to 21.6%.
  • Gas remained the largest category at 30.1% in both years; Oil and Other stayed at 4.0%.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the two pie charts, the UK, the years and the percentage measure.
  2. Give an overview highlighting the main increase, the main decrease and stable categories.
  3. Compare the 2014 shares, grouping the larger sources before the smaller ones.
  4. Describe the 2018 figures and directly compare them with 2014.

Band 5.0

The pie chart gives information about how many different fuel sources were used in UK between 2014 and 2018. Overall, the amount of coal production reduced dramaticly, and nuclear energy also decreased slightly, while renewable energy production saw rapid increase. Additionally, gas production and oil and others remained stability. In 2014, gas was the dominant source, at 30.1% of energy generation. Coal was the second largest fuel, making up 28.4%, while nuclear accounted for 22.5%. Renewables had a smaller share, at 15%, and oil and other sources were the lowest, with 4%. In 2018, gas still generated 30.1%, so its proportion did not change. However, renewables rose to 26.2%, becoming the second largest source and nearly matching gas. In contrast, coal fell to 18.1%, a drop of 10.3 percentage points, and was then below both gas and renewables. Nuclear declined slightly to 21.6%. Oil and other sources remained unchanged at 4%. Overall, the main change was the shift from coal to renewable energy, while gas stayed stable and the smallest category did not vary.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Revise the opening to state that the charts show the percentage shares of energy generation, rather than how many fuel sources were used.
2
Check every figure against the chart and practise describing the main movements with precise terms such as “rose by,” “fell to,” and “remained unchanged.”
3
Before finishing, proofread for articles and word forms, especially patterns such as “a rapid increase,” “fell dramatically,” and “remained stable.”
