There is a debate surrounding the ethicality of maintaining zoos, with some individuals advocating for their closure due to the perceived cruelty towards animals, while others argue that zoos play a crucial role in the conservation of wildlife. In my opinion, I tend to support the perspective that zoos are indeed detrimental to the well-being of animals. Although some modern facilities provide good food and medical care, captivity still prevents many animals from behaving as they would in the wild.
Those who oppose zoos point out that animals may be kept in spaces that are far smaller than their natural habitats. As a result, they can have limited opportunities to roam, hunt or form social groups. This may cause stress, particularly for species that naturally travel long distances. Even attentive staff cannot fully recreate the freedom and complexity of a wild environment. For these reasons, keeping animals on display for public entertainment is difficult to justify.
On the other hand, supporters argue that zoos can protect endangered species through managed breeding programmes and veterinary treatment. They can also educate visitors about threats such as habitat loss and encourage public support for conservation. In some cases, rescued animals that cannot survive in the wild may receive lifelong care. These benefits are important, but they do not mean that every zoo provides meaningful protection or that captive breeding always leads to animals being released into their natural habitats.
Overall, I believe the welfare costs of conventional zoos outweigh their advantages. Rather than maintaining facilities primarily for display, society should prioritise genuine wildlife sanctuaries and conservation projects that protect animals in their natural environments. Zoos that make a demonstrable contribution to rescue and conservation may have a role, but their standards and purpose should be carefully scrutinised.
