Part 1 · Band 8

are you good at memorizing things?

Source-reported band score · 54 words

Sample answer

I'd say it depends. When it comes to math or anything related to numbers, I'm pretty good at memorizing them. I'm quite sensitive to numbers and can recall phone numbers after just seeing them once. But when it comes to things I'm not interested in, like geography or history, I struggle to retain information.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer develops in a clear sequence: it gives a qualified response (“it depends”), explains a strength with a phone-number example, then contrasts this with less-interesting subjects. That makes the ideas easy to follow in text, but fluency of spoken delivery cannot be assessed from text alone. Practise delivering this answer in 30 seconds, then repeat it in 20 seconds while keeping the contrast and example.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “recall phone numbers” and “struggle to retain information” express the contrast precisely, and the topic examples make the answer specific. “Numbers” is repeated, and “sensitive to numbers” is understandable but slightly less idiomatic in this context. For a more natural variation, try “good with numbers” or “have a good feel for numbers,” while keeping the clear contrast between subjects.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer uses a good range of accurate structures, including the opening qualification “I'd say it depends,” the “When it comes to…” clauses, and the relative clause “things I'm not interested in.” The final contrast is also easy to understand. There is no clear grammatical error to correct; as a refinement, practise varying the repeated clause opener by using “However” or “By contrast” once.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from this text, so this is a practice guide, not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “memorizing,” “geography,” and “information,” then group the answer into thought units: “I'd say it depends / When it comes to math…” Record one delivery, check that each phrase is easy to understand, and compare a second take. No claim is made about how you currently sound.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Keep the effective contrast, but replace one repetition of “numbers” with “them” or “number-based topics” where the meaning stays clear.
  • Try “I have a good feel for numbers” in place of “I'm quite sensitive to numbers” for a more idiomatic expression.
  • Practise the response in 20–30 seconds, keeping the opening qualification, one specific example, and the contrast with geography and history.
