Part 1 · Band 6

Do you work or are you a student?

Source-reported band score · 50 words

Sample answer

Well, I'm a student at the university, and this is my 3rd year at this place. Also, I have a part-time job as a teacher at a vocational school. I'm still working this term at these places as a teacher, and my students are between ten and eighteen years old.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The ideas follow a clear sequence: you identify yourself as a student, add your part-time teaching job, then give information about this term and your students’ ages. The response is relevant, though the link between “these places” and your teaching role is not fully clear. For practice, give this answer aloud in 30 seconds, then repeat it in 20 seconds while keeping the same key details and making the job connection explicit.

Lexical Resource

The answer uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “part-time job,” “vocational school” and “students,” and the ages add useful specificity. However, “at this place” is vague, and “teacher” is repeated without much variation. As a refinement, use more precise references such as “there” or “at the vocational school,” and try a natural alternative such as “I teach” while preserving the same facts.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use complete sentences and connect details with “and” and “Also,” so the response is easy to follow. The main limitation is clarity rather than a clear grammatical error: in “I'm still working this term at these places as a teacher,” it is difficult to tell which place the teaching role refers to. Practise combining the job and term details in one sentence with the school named explicitly.

Pronunciation

This is text only, so pronunciation cannot be assessed; this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise word stress in “vocational school” and “part-time job,” then group the answer into thought units: “I’m a student at university / and I’m in my third year.” Record yourself reading it, check that each phrase is easy to understand, and adjust the grouping if the meaning becomes unclear.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Replace “at this place” with a clear reference such as “there” so your study location is easy to understand.
  • State the teaching role and its location together, then add that you are continuing the job this term.
  • Practise delivering the answer in 20–30 seconds, keeping the student, job and student-age details while avoiding repeated wording.
