Part 1 · Band 5

Is that a big city or a small place?

Source-reported band score · 54 words

Sample answer

Definitely, it's a small place, but there are many types of historical sites. There are many shops, and the garden is nice. There are big forests, but there are not many amenities. This place is not good for living because the conditions of hospitals, schools, etc., are not good. So, it's a small place.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

Your answer follows a clear sequence: you identify the place as small, mention its historical sites, shops and natural features, then explain a drawback and restate your view. However, the repeated openings “There are” and the final repetition of “it’s a small place” make the development sound somewhat list-like. Practise a 30-second response using this answer: give the overall description, two details, then one drawback and a brief conclusion.

Lexical Resource

You use relevant place-related vocabulary, including “historical sites,” “amenities,” and “forests,” so the listener can picture both the attractions and the limitations. The range is modest, though, and “There are” recurs several times; “nice” is also quite general. For a more varied response, replace one repeated sentence opening and choose a precise alternative such as “pleasant” for the garden, while keeping the description accurate.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Your meaning is generally clear, and you connect ideas with “but” and “because.” Most sentences use straightforward structures, and “This place is not good for living” has an unnatural construction; “not a good place to live” is more idiomatic. Practise combining related details into one sentence, then check whether infinitive phrases such as “a place to live” sound natural in context.

Pronunciation

There is no audio, so this is not an assessment of a recording or of your pronunciation. As a practice guide, mark the main stress in “historical sites,” “amenities,” and “hospitals,” then group the answer into thought units: description, positive features, and drawback. Record yourself reading it once, listen back while following the text, and check that each key word is clear and each group expresses one idea.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Organise the answer in three parts: identify the place, mention two features, and finish with one drawback and your overall view.
  • Replace one or more repeated “There are” openings with “It has” or “The area also has.”
  • Practise the more natural phrase “a good place to live” and record a 30-second version to check that each detail is easy to follow.
