Part 1 · Band 7

Is that a big city or a small place?

Source-reported band score · 46 words

Sample answer

In my opinion, my hometown is actually small compared to big cities like Ho Chi Minh City. So whenever I go out on the street, I feel like the traffic is not so heavy on the roads. The motorcycles are crowded in a very small space.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer develops in a clear sequence: it identifies the hometown as small, compares it with Ho Chi Minh City, then describes the traffic and motorcycles. The final detail adds useful contrast, though the relationship between generally light traffic and motorcycles crowded together could be made clearer. Practise this answer in 20 seconds, using one sentence for the comparison and one for the traffic detail; fluency cannot be scored from text alone.

Lexical Resource

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “traffic,” “roads” and “motorcycles,” and the comparison with “big cities like Ho Chi Minh City” makes your meaning clear. However, “The motorcycles are crowded in a very small space” is an awkward collocation, and “small” is repeated. Try “packed closely together” for the motorcycles and vary the comparison with “quite small” or “much smaller.”

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer includes a clear comparative structure in “small compared to big cities” and a time clause in “whenever I go out on the street.” These forms are understandable and mostly well controlled. The final sentence is grammatically possible but makes the motorcycles sound as if they are crowded, rather than describing their close arrangement. Practise combining a clear subject with a natural verb phrase, such as “motorcycles are packed together.”

Pronunciation

This practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “Ho Chi Minh City,” “HEAVY,” and “MOTORCYCLES.” Group the answer into thought units: “My hometown is actually small / compared to big cities like Ho Chi Minh City.” Record yourself reading it, then check whether each phrase is easy to understand and the key comparison words are clear; no particular accent is required.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Answer the comparison directly in your first sentence, then give one short traffic detail as support.
  • Replace “The motorcycles are crowded” with a natural arrangement phrase such as “motorcycles are packed closely together.”
  • Practise a 20-second version aloud: keep a brief pause between the hometown comparison and the traffic description.
