Part 1 · Band 8

When do you usually get up in the morning?

Source-reported band score · 52 words

Sample answer

Well, actually, as a top high school student, I need to get up early in the morning. It's usually around five or six o'clock. However, on the weekends, I have more time to relax and let my mind rest, so I decide to open my eyes at around seven or eight o'clock.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer follows a clear sequence: it gives your usual early routine, explains it with “as a top high school student,” then contrasts it with weekends. This makes the response easy to follow. The weekend point could connect more directly to the question by stating whether you wake up or actually get out of bed at seven or eight. Practise giving this answer in 20 seconds, keeping the weekday–weekend contrast.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “let my mind rest” add a personal reason and go beyond a bare time answer. “Open my eyes” is understandable, but in this context it is less direct than saying when you wake up or get up. To make the response sound more natural and precise, choose one of those verbs and use it consistently when describing your morning routine.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use accurate complete sentences and show some range through “so” and “however,” as well as the contrast between weekday and weekend routines. For example, “on the weekends, I have more time to relax” is a clear dependent clause followed by a main idea. The structures are mostly simple, which suits Part 1; as a next step, combine the time and contrast more compactly without making the answer sound rehearsed.

Pronunciation

This is a text-only assessment, so pronunciation cannot be scored; this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “high school student” and “weekends,” and group the answer into thought groups: “I need to get up early / around five or six o’clock.” Record yourself saying it, then check whether the key time phrases are easy to identify and the groups sound complete.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Clarify whether the times refer to waking up or getting out of bed, and use that verb consistently.
  • Keep the weekday–weekend contrast, but connect it with a concise transition such as “At weekends, though.”
  • Practise a 20-second version aloud: give your usual time, then the weekend time and one brief reason.
