Ideas to explore

  • Compare the leading reason across both years: suitable degree courses ranked first, rising slightly from 35% to 37%.
  • Highlight the largest increase: choosing a university close to the parental home went from 10% to 22%.
  • Contrast the sharpest decline with the smaller fall: sports and social activities dropped from 19% to 6%, while quality of resources moved from 21% to 17%.

Band 8.0

The pie graphs illustrate information regarding five primary factors driving the university selection of students in the UK between 1997 and 2007. Overall, there was a decreasing number of students choosing their universities based on most given reasons, except for suitable degree courses and proximity to parental home factors, which showed a reversed trend. Additionally, the first pie is labelled 1987 in the graphic, although the task statement says 1997; the figures below follow the chart labels. In 1987, suitable degree courses were the leading reason, at 35%, followed by quality of resources at 21% and good sports and social activities at 19%. Quality of teaching accounted for 15%, while being close to the parental home was least common, at 10%. By 2007, suitable courses remained the most frequently selected factor and edged up to 37%. The share choosing proximity to home more than doubled, from 10% to 22%, becoming the second-largest category. Teaching quality also rose slightly, from 15% to 18%. In contrast, resources fell from 21% to 17%, while sports and social activities saw the sharpest decline, dropping from 19% to 6%. Thus, course suitability stayed dominant, while proximity gained importance and campus activities became markedly less influential.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Describe the chart as showing proportions or shares, not a “number” of students, unless actual student counts are provided.
2
Write an overview that matches the data: degree courses, closeness to home, and teaching quality rose; resources and sports/social activities fell.
3
Check the year labels against the visual before drafting, and explicitly flag the 1987-versus-1997 discrepancy in this task.
