Ideas to explore

  • Highlight the main transformation: a central seating and table area in the earlier plan gives way to a layout with more specialised facilities.
  • Compare how the east side changes from children's and adult non-fiction books plus an enquiry desk to a lecture room, an information desk, self-service machines and a café.
  • Track the west side from media, adult fiction and a reading room to storytelling, children's fiction, reference books and a computer room; note that the entrance stays centrally located.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the two plans and give an overview of the most significant changes and any feature that remains.
  2. Describe the earlier layout, grouping rooms by side or by upper, middle and lower sections.
  3. Describe the current layout using the same spatial framework so the reader can compare positions.
  4. Finish with a concise summary of how the library's range of facilities has changed.

Band 9.0

The illustrations provide information about the changes taking place in the central library over a 20-year period. Overall, the library underwent substantial changes to include more recreational services and modernization while the main structure of the building remained unchanged. In the previous plan, there were two large tables surrounded by eight chairs each, located in the centre of the library. The enquiry desk, which handled tickets and book returns, was in the southeast corner, while the reading room occupied the southwest. CDs, videos and computer games were in the northwest, opposite children’s books in the northeast; adult fiction and non-fiction books filled the middle sections on the west and east, respectively.

Today, the entrance remains at the south, and the central table area has been removed. The northwest now contains sofas, a storytelling area and children’s fiction books. A lecture room occupies the northeast, with adult fiction below it. An information desk and self-service machines have been added along the eastern side. In the southwest, the reading room has been replaced by all reference books and a computer room, while a café occupies the southeast. Overall, the services now cover study, technology and recreation as well as book borrowing.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the overview more informative by naming the biggest conversions: the central table area disappears, the reading room is replaced, and new leisure and technology facilities appear.
2
Use a consistent route when describing each plan—for example, start in the northwest, move across the north, then describe the middle and southern areas.
3
Replace broad summary terms such as “modernization” with precise map labels, and check that each location is paired with the correct side or corner.
