Ideas to explore

  • Highlight the main transformation: a central seating and table area in the earlier plan gives way to a layout with more specialised facilities.
  • Compare how the east side changes from children's and adult non-fiction books plus an enquiry desk to a lecture room, an information desk, self-service machines and a café.
  • Track the west side from media, adult fiction and a reading room to storytelling, children's fiction, reference books and a computer room; note that the entrance stays centrally located.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the two plans and give an overview of the most significant changes and any feature that remains.
  2. Describe the earlier layout, grouping rooms by side or by upper, middle and lower sections.
  3. Describe the current layout using the same spatial framework so the reader can compare positions.
  4. Finish with a concise summary of how the library's range of facilities has changed.

Band 5.0

The stipulated layouts sketch out the modification that has been made in the floor plan of central library since 2004 . According to the blueprints, 20 years ago a public library incorporated a section of books for children which has been supplanted by a lecture room in present times and enquiry desk for tickets, book returns, etc.). The main entrance remains at the centre of the southern wall in both plans. Overall, the library has been reorganised, with the central tables removed and several new facilities added.

Twenty years ago, the children’s books occupied the north-east corner, while CDs, videos and computer games were in the north-west. Adult fiction and non-fiction were positioned below these areas on the left and right respectively. A reading room was in the south-west, opposite the enquiry desk, and tables and chairs filled the central space.

Today, the former children’s-books area is used as a lecture room, and adult non-fiction has been replaced by adult fiction. The enquiry desk has moved to the right-hand side near the middle and is now accompanied by an information desk and self-service machines. On the left, the old reading room and media section have given way to storytelling spaces, children’s fiction, reference books and a computer room. A café now occupies the south-east corner.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Write a one-sentence overview that names the most significant changes, such as the removal of the central seating area and the addition of new facilities.
2
Describe the old and current layouts in separate paragraphs, using consistent location terms such as “on the left,” “on the right,” and “in the south-east corner.”
3
Proofread the opening for articles, sentence length and spacing around punctuation; replace awkward expressions such as “in present times” with concise alternatives.
