Dear Anna, Hope things are well at your end. How are you finding college now? I know you were in dilemma after completing your first semester and you told me you might switch classes. I received your letter about your assignment on celebration of New Year’s in places around the world. New year in my country is an important occasion because it gives families and friends a chance to meet and celebrate together. People look forward to the start of the year and often talk about what they hope to do in the months ahead.
We usually celebrate by having a special meal with relatives or close friends. As midnight approaches, people count down together and wish one another a happy New Year. Some families watch celebrations on television, while others go outside to enjoy the atmosphere. The following day is often quieter, with people visiting family or spending time at home.
What I enjoy most is the feeling of togetherness. It is lovely to put ordinary worries aside for an evening and catch up with people I do not see very often. I also like the hopeful mood, although I am not very good at keeping New Year resolutions!
I hope this gives you a useful starting point for the project. Let me know if you need a more detailed example.
Best wishes, Your friend
