It is widely argued that affluent nations should provide alternative forms of assistance to impoverished countries instead of financial aid. I unequivocally disagree with this perspective, as I believe that the issue of poverty in these nations is not solely attributable to a lack of funds, despite the continuous inflow of financial support. The monetary assistance can be ineffective when it is poorly managed or fails to address the causes of poverty, but this does not mean that it should be replaced altogether. In many countries, funding is essential for immediate needs such as food, medical care and clean water. It can also support longer-term projects, including roads, schools and local businesses. Without adequate resources, even well-designed programmes may not reach the communities that need them.
At the same time, financial aid alone is unlikely to create lasting progress. Developed countries can share technical expertise, provide vocational training and help improve healthcare and education. For example, training local health workers may enable a community to deliver essential services long after a particular aid project has ended. Assistance of this kind can also help governments use public funds more effectively and build skills within the local workforce. However, these measures require investment too, and their success often depends on having enough money to pay staff, obtain equipment and maintain facilities.
The most effective response, therefore, is to combine financial aid with practical and technical support, rather than choosing one form of assistance over the other. Donor countries should work with local communities to identify priorities and monitor how resources are used. This approach recognises that funding alone cannot eliminate poverty, while still treating it as an essential part of a broader and more sustainable solution.
