Ideas to explore

  • Parents shape social values through repeated everyday examples and guidance tailored to a child’s behaviour.
  • Schools let children practise cooperation, conflict resolution and respect among peers with different perspectives.
  • A balanced argument can assign parents the primary role while explaining how schools reinforce and extend lessons from home.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the debate and state your position clearly.
  2. Explain the case for parents, supported by a specific example of modelling or guidance.
  3. Explain what schools contribute through peer interaction and structured learning.
  4. Give your judgement on which role is primary and why.
  5. Conclude by showing how cooperation between families and schools benefits children.

Band 8.0

There is an ongoing debate regarding the responsibility of shaping children into contributing members of society, with some people asserting that this task should be undertaken by parents, while others argue that it is best achieved within the school environment. Both perspectives have compelling arguments, which will be critically analyzed and elaborated upon in this essay. Parents play a central role because children first learn social behaviour at home. Through everyday interactions, parents can model respect, honesty and consideration for others, while setting boundaries when their children behave selfishly or unfairly. They also know their children well and can provide guidance suited to their individual needs. For example, involving a child in household responsibilities can teach cooperation and accountability in a practical, consistent way.

Schools, however, offer important advantages. Children spend much of their time there and interact with classmates from different backgrounds, making school a natural setting in which to practise sharing, resolving disagreements and respecting rules. Teachers can also explain wider responsibilities, such as inclusion and civic participation, and encourage students to consider viewpoints beyond their families. In addition, school-wide expectations can provide a common standard for behaviour, including for children whose home environments offer less guidance in this area.

In my view, neither parents nor schools can do this job as effectively alone. Parents establish a child’s earliest values, while schools allow those values to be tested and developed in a diverse community. The strongest approach is therefore a partnership: families should model good conduct, and schools should reinforce it through discussion, shared activities and clear expectations. When these influences are consistent, children are more likely to become considerate and responsible members of society.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the introduction’s formulaic preview with a direct statement that both parents and schools matter, then state your view that they should work together.
2
Add one specific school-based example, such as a class discussion about resolving conflict or a shared responsibility project, to develop the civic-learning point.
3
Review repeated references to society and social responsibility; vary them selectively with precise terms such as “citizenship,” “considerate behaviour” or “community responsibilities.”
