Teaching children to be an active part of the society is always been subject of debates since people are divided between who thinks that the major role of education should be of the guardians and someone who thinks that school has the task of instruct kids to learn to live with others. I think that both families and schools have important responsibilities, and they should work together rather than leave the job to only one side.
Parents are important because children spend much time with them. They watch how their mother or father behaves and often copy this behaviour. For example, when a parent shares something or says sorry after a mistake, the child can learn to do the same. Parents can also explain why it is wrong to hurt another person. These lessons can start before children go to school.
School also has an important role. Children meet classmates from different families and need to learn how to work together. In a group activity, they must listen to others and share the work. Teachers can explain the rules and help children when they have a disagreement. This shows them how to behave with people who are not members of their own family.
I think both parents and schools should help. A teacher's lesson about respect will not be useful if a child sees adults behaving badly at home. In the same way, parents cannot give every experience that a classroom provides. They should talk to the teachers if a child has a problem, so the child receives a clear message from both places.
Parents should begin teaching good behaviour early, and schools should develop it through practice with other children. The aim is not only to follow rules but also to understand how actions affect other people.
In conclusion, children can learn important social lessons at home and at school. Parents provide daily examples, while teachers give opportunities to cooperate in a wider group. I believe these two kinds of teaching work best together.
