What do you do in your free time?

Source-reported band score · 44 words

Sample answer

I'm usually quite busy, but when I do have free time, I love to travel. I'm always ready for an adventure. With my backpack packed and waiting, I try to find affordable destinations and just head off to explore. It's something I really enjoy.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The ideas follow a clear sequence: you explain that free time is limited, identify travel as your preferred activity, then describe getting ready and setting off to explore. The closing sentence reinforces your enjoyment. To develop this naturally in speech, practise a 30-second answer using this same sequence, adding one brief reason or detail without introducing a new personal fact. Fluency cannot be assessed from text alone.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “affordable destinations” and “head off to explore” are relevant and natural, while “ready for an adventure” gives the answer an enthusiastic tone. The vocabulary communicates your meaning clearly. Because this is a short response, its range is necessarily limited; as an optional refinement, vary the travel wording—for example, use “set off” instead of repeating ideas around heading off and exploring.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use a well-controlled combination of clauses, especially in “when I do have free time,” and the present simple suits a general description of your habits. The sentences are easy to follow, with no clear grammatical error requiring correction. One optional refinement is “With my backpack packed and waiting,” where “waiting” can sound as though it describes the backpack; try “With my backpack packed and ready” for a clearer expression.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from a written answer, and this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “affordable destinations” (af-FORD-able; desti-NA-tions) and “adventure” (ad-VEN-ture). Read in thought groups: “I’m usually quite busy / but when I do have free time / I love to travel.” Record yourself, then check whether the phrase boundaries are clear and the stressed syllables stand out.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Practise delivering the answer in about 30 seconds, keeping the sequence of limited free time, travel, preparation and enjoyment.
  • Add one short, truthful detail about what you enjoy doing when you explore, without naming a destination or experience that is not part of your answer.
  • Record a practice version and check that you group the opening into clear thought units and stress key words such as “travel” and “adventure.”
