Part 1 · Band 7

What do you like to do in your free time?

Sample answer

I don't have one specific activity I always do in my free time. But I love playing sports whenever I get the chance. I also enjoy watching Netflix series when I'm free. Right now, I'm focused on finishing the series 'Breaking Bad.' It's about a chemistry teacher who gets diagnosed with cancer. After his diagnosis, he decides to start cooking and selling methamphetamine to secure his family's future. The plot is intense, and I find the character development fascinating. I love how the story keeps me on the edge of my seat, making it hard to stop watching after just one episode. Besides watching series, I also play football with my friends every weekend. It's a great way to stay active and bond with them. We often play at the local park, and I enjoy the friendly competition. Sometimes, I even join a local league to play more regularly. In addition, I like to read books, especially thrillers and mysteries. Reading allows me to escape into different worlds and experience various perspectives. Overall, my free time is a mix of sports, watching shows, and reading, which helps me relax and recharge for the week ahead.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The ideas move clearly from sports to watching “Breaking Bad,” then football, reading, and a summary of how these activities help you relax. The detailed plot explanation takes up more space than the other interests, so the answer may feel less balanced for Part 1. Text alone cannot show spoken fluency. Practise giving this answer in 45 seconds, limiting each hobby to one main detail.

Lexical Resource

Phrases such as “on the edge of my seat” and “bond with them” express enjoyment and social connection naturally, while “character development” is apt for discussing a series. The vocabulary is varied without sounding forced. One optional refinement is “a mix of sports, watching shows, and reading,” where the list is not fully parallel. Try using matching verb forms for activities throughout the final summary.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use a good range of structures, including the relative clause in “a chemistry teacher who gets diagnosed with cancer” and the -ing clause “making it hard to stop watching.” The sentences are generally clear and controlled. A small stylistic improvement would be to make the list in “a mix of sports, watching shows, and reading” parallel. When editing, check that items in a series share the same grammatical form.

Pronunciation

A text transcript cannot show your pronunciation, so this is a practice guide, not an assessment of a recording. Practise the stress in “chemistry teacher” (CHEMistry TEACHer) and “character development” (CHARacter deVELopment). Mark thought groups in “I play football with my friends / every weekend.” Record yourself saying these phrases, then check a dictionary audio model and compare which syllables receive stress.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • For a more balanced Part 1 answer, give each hobby one detail and reduce the Breaking Bad plot summary to a single sentence.
  • Practise the answer in 45 seconds; keep the opening, three activities, and closing idea, but remove repeated statements of enjoyment.
  • Record a practice version and check whether your lists use parallel forms, such as “playing sports, watching shows, and reading.”

Ideas to explore

  • Name reading as the free-time activity you enjoy.
  • Mention the library and the Peace Hotel as places where you used to read.
  • Include the detail that you read in class three times, expressed clearly.

Suggested structure

  1. Answer the free-time question directly with the activity.
  2. Add a sentence about when or where you used to read.
  3. Give the class-reading detail in a separate, clear sentence.
  4. Check that each detail connects to reading rather than introducing a new question.
