Sample answer

For me, I am especially interested in learning about social sciences and humanities, particularly religion. I've spent time learning about the philosophy of religion, sociology of religion, anthropology of religion, and so on. I've been learning about Buddhism, Islam, and also Christianity, and I'm especially interested in how religion can lead to violence or how it can promote peace and understanding among different cultures. In my free time, I often read books and articles that delve into these topics, allowing me to explore various perspectives and theories. I also enjoy attending lectures and discussions at local universities or community centers, where I can engage with experts and fellow enthusiasts. Additionally, I like to participate in online forums where people share their experiences and insights related to their faiths. This not only broadens my understanding but also fosters a sense of community among those who are passionate about these subjects. Overall, my free time is dedicated to deepening my knowledge and appreciation of the complex role that religion plays in our world.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The ideas progress clearly from your interest in religion, to what you read and where you discuss it, and finally to what you gain from those activities. The detail is relevant, though the answer is quite developed for a Part 1 question. Practise giving a 60-second version: keep one sentence about your interests, two about your activities, and a brief concluding sentence.

Lexical Resource

Your vocabulary is precise and varied: “philosophy of religion, sociology of religion, anthropology of religion” conveys the breadth of your interests, while “fosters a sense of community” describes a benefit effectively. The topic-specific language suits your answer. One optional refinement is to avoid the vague “and so on” after the list by naming it as a selection of related fields.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You use a good range of accurate structures, including the contrast in “how religion can lead to violence or how it can promote peace” and the relative clause “where I can engage with experts and fellow enthusiasts.” The answer is easy to follow grammatically. “For me, I am especially interested” is slightly redundant rather than incorrect; starting directly with your interest would sound more streamlined.

Pronunciation

This is a practice guide, not an assessment of a recording; no audio was provided. Practise the word stress in “anthropology,” “understanding,” and “community.” Mark thought groups, for example: “I also enjoy attending lectures and discussions / at local universities or community centers.” Record a 60-second response, then check that each phrase is clearly grouped and the key content words are stressed.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Practise a 60-second version that answers the question immediately, then gives two specific free-time activities and one brief benefit.
  • Replace vague list endings such as “and so on” with a concise summary of what the examples have in common.
  • Record yourself once using clear thought groups, then listen back and check whether the activities and their benefits are easy to distinguish.

Ideas to explore

  • Name reading as the free-time activity you enjoy.
  • Mention the library and the Peace Hotel as places where you used to read.
  • Include the detail that you read in class three times, expressed clearly.

Suggested structure

  1. Answer the free-time question directly with the activity.
  2. Add a sentence about when or where you used to read.
  3. Give the class-reading detail in a separate, clear sentence.
  4. Check that each detail connects to reading rather than introducing a new question.
