Sample answer

Generally, I really like eating Vietnamese foods, but typically I like eating banh mi the most. Uh, it is a kind of bread cake that contains, um, pork and vegetables inside. Well, to be honest, although it is not the most common dish to be popularized around the world, it is still an apple of my eye for its unique taste and flavor. The bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, which makes it very enjoyable to eat. The filling usually includes marinated pork, pickled carrots, and cucumber, along with fresh herbs like cilantro. This combination creates a delicious balance of savory and fresh flavors. Moreover, I love how versatile banh mi can be. You can find many variations depending on the region in Vietnam. Some people even add spicy chili sauce for an extra kick, while others might use chicken or tofu for a vegetarian option. Another reason I enjoy banh mi is that it is a convenient street food. You can easily grab one while walking around, making it perfect for a quick lunch or snack. Overall, banh mi is not just a meal for me; it is a delightful experience that reminds me of my culture and the vibrant street food scene in Vietnam.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The response follows a clear sequence: it names banh mi, describes its ingredients and texture, gives examples of variations, then explains its convenience and personal meaning. This creates a developed answer, though it is much longer than a typical Part 1 response and includes several fillers, such as “Uh” and “um.” Practise delivering this answer in 30–40 seconds, keeping the food description and one personal reason while leaving out one supporting detail.

Lexical Resource

There is useful topic-specific vocabulary, including “marinated pork,” “pickled carrots,” “fresh herbs,” and “savory and fresh flavors.” However, “bread cake” is an unclear description of banh mi, and “an apple of my eye” is not a natural way to say that a food is a favorite. Learn and rehearse the collocation “one of my favorite foods” and use “crusty bread roll” to describe the bread more clearly.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

The answer uses a good range of structures, including the relative clause “which makes it very enjoyable to eat” and the conditional “depending on the region in Vietnam.” Most sentences are well formed. The opening repeats “I like eating,” and “although” makes the sentence about worldwide popularity unnecessarily complex. For a cleaner version, combine the opening into one sentence and use a direct contrast: “It may not be widely known worldwide, but I love it.”

Pronunciation

Pronunciation cannot be assessed from the text, and this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise word stress in “Vietnamese” and “marinated pork,” then group the phrase “crispy on the outside / and soft on the inside” into two thought groups. Record yourself saying the full answer, check that each group is easy to understand, and repeat any phrase that sounds unclear to you.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Replace “bread cake” with “crusty bread roll” or “sandwich” so the listener can picture the food accurately.
  • For a Part 1 response, choose two key details—such as the taste and convenience—and aim to finish in about 30–40 seconds.
  • Practise the phrases “marinated pork” and “crispy on the outside and soft on the inside” in thought groups, then record and check whether each phrase is clear.
