Part 1 · Band 4

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

Source-reported band score · 43 words

Sample answer

I can speak about the kind of music I enjoy listening to. I didn't like listening to different kinds; I only like English music. However, I can't speak with people who have talent in other genres. My favorite kind of music is Farsi.

Answer analysis

Fluency & Coherence

The answer moves from a general introduction to your listening habits, then to difficulty discussing other genres, and finally to your favorite, as in “My favorite kind of music is Farsi.” That gives it a basic sequence, but the contrast between “only like English music” and Farsi as your favorite is confusing, and no reason is developed. Practise a 30-second response using these four points: preference, listening habit, contrast, and one true reason.

Lexical Resource

You use relevant music vocabulary, including “different kinds,” “genres,” and “favorite kind,” so the topic is clear. However, some wording is broad or unnatural: “I can speak about” is an unnecessary opening, and “people who have talent in other genres” is less idiomatic than “people who are talented in other genres.” Next, learn and practise a few precise collocations, such as “listen to a genre” and “be into a type of music.”

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Most sentences use straightforward, understandable structures, including “My favorite kind of music is Farsi.” The tense shift in “I didn't like listening” followed by “I only like” makes the time reference unclear; the surrounding answer appears to describe your current preferences. Also, “I can speak about” is grammatical but does not clearly express your preference. Practise describing current habits consistently in the present simple.

Pronunciation

This is a text-only assessment, so pronunciation cannot be judged, and this practice guide is not an assessment of a recording. Practise the word stress in “different kinds” and “favorite kind of music,” and group the answer into thought units: “I mostly listen to English music / but Farsi music is my favorite.” Record yourself saying it, then check whether each phrase is easy to understand and the key words stand out.

A transcript shows language and organisation. Fluency, delivery and pronunciation require an audio recording; the synthetic voice demonstrates the text, not the original speaker.

  • Answer the question directly in your first sentence; remove “I can speak about” and state your preference.
  • Keep the time reference consistent: use the present simple for current listening habits and preferences.
  • Clarify the English/Farsi contrast and add one genuine reason or detail to explain your favorite.

Ideas to explore

  • Explain whether you listen to one language of music regularly but prefer another style or language.
  • Mention a real reason for your preference, such as the lyrics, melodies, or connection to your culture.

Suggested structure

  1. Name the kind of music you enjoy.
  2. Say how varied your listening habits are.
  3. Explain how your usual listening relates to your favorite kind.
  4. Add one personal reason or detail to develop the answer.
