Ideas to explore

  • Compare the pace of adoption: refrigerator ownership rose especially quickly between 1940 and 1960, while washing-machine ownership changed more gradually.
  • Identify milestones in appliance ownership: refrigerators reached 100% by 1980, and vacuum cleaners did so by 2000.
  • Set the decline in housework hours alongside rising appliance ownership, while avoiding claims that the charts prove one trend caused the other.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce both charts, the measures shown and the 1920–2019 period.
  2. Give an overview of the broad appliance-ownership increases and the fall in housework hours.
  3. Compare the three appliances, highlighting their starting points and the years they reached universal ownership.
  4. Describe the housework-hour decline chronologically, noting the plateau at 15 hours between 1980 and 2000.

Band 7.0

The provided charts illustrate the changes in the ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent on housework in households in a particular country from 1920 to 2019. Overall, the percentage of households owning washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners increased steadily over the years, with all three reaching 100% ownership by 2019. Looking more closely, however, the appliances did not follow identical patterns: washing-machine ownership rose from 40% in 1920 to 70% in 1960, slipped to about 65% in 1980, and then recovered to roughly 75% by 2019. Refrigerator ownership climbed sharply, from almost zero in 1920 to around 90% in 1960, reaching 100% by 1980 and remaining there. Vacuum-cleaner ownership increased from approximately 30% in 1920 to 50% in 1940, then to about 70% in 1960, reaching full ownership by 2000. Housework time moved in the opposite direction, falling from 50 hours per household per week in 1920 to 35 in 1940 and 20 in 1960. It then decreased more gradually, to around 15 hours in both 1980 and 2000, and approximately 10 hours in 2019.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Revise the overview against both graphs before drafting: only refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reach 100%, while washing machines end at about 75%.
2
Describe the washing-machine dip explicitly, and use “generally rose” rather than “increased steadily” for a trend that is not continuously upward.
3
Compare the two charts in separate sections and include the main housework figures: 50 hours in 1920, about 20 in 1960, and about 10 in 2019.
