It is obviously show that cooling device was fully unknown throughout early 20’s However it had a rapid increase of ownership in later years. Overall, the ownership of all three appliances went up, while the number of hours spent on housework went down. In 1920, washing machines were the most common appliance, at about 40% of households. Refrigerators were almost not used, but vacuum cleaners were found in around 30% of homes.
In 1940, washing machine ownership reached 60%, compared with about 50% for refrigerators and 40% for vacuum cleaners. By 1960, refrigerators had risen sharply to about 90%, and the other two appliances were close to 70%. Refrigerator ownership reached 100% in 1980 and stayed at this level. Vacuum cleaner ownership increased more slowly, reaching 100% by 2000 and remaining there in 2019. Washing machine ownership changed less, dipping slightly in 1980 before increasing to about 75% at the end.
Housework hours fell from 50 per week in 1920 to 20 in 1960. They then dropped to around 15 in 1980 and 2000, and about 10 in 2019. This show that appliances became more common as time for housework reduced.
