Band 6.0

The charts illustrate how many school leavers chose to study at a certain university in the UK between 1987 and 2007. Overall, there was an increase in the proportion of young people choosing to study at this school because it provided suitable courses and it was close to their home, while the figures for those who chose it for its teaching quality and sports facilities changed in opposite directions. The percentage selecting suitable degree courses remained the largest reason, rising slightly from 35% in 1987 to 37% in 2007. Similarly, the share who valued proximity to home more than doubled, from 10% to 22%, making it the second most common reason in 2007. By contrast, good sports and social activities became much less important, falling from 19% to 6%, the lowest proportion in the later year. The figure for quality of teaching increased modestly from 15% to 18%, whereas the proportion choosing the university for its resources declined from 21% to 17%. In 1987, proximity to home was the least-cited factor, while resources ranked second; by 2007 it had overtaken the other three smaller categories.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the opening’s “how many school leavers” with a direct description of the reasons and percentages shown, and name 1987 and 2007 as the two comparison years.
2
Check the overview against each category: courses, proximity, teaching, resources, and sports/social activities; state the strongest rises and falls without implying that all figures increased.
3
Group the body comparisons by direction of change, and use “percentage” or “proportion” consistently when describing the pie-chart figures.
