The provided charts elucidate the global distribution of water utilization across various sectors, while concurrently offering a comparative analysis of water consumption in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Overall, agriculture accounts for the predominant share of global water usage, with industrial and domestic sectors following suit. Additionally, a marked disparity in water consumption between the two countries is evident, with Brazil recording far higher per-person use and a much larger area of irrigated land.
In the line graph, global agricultural use rose from about 500 km³ in 1900 to approximately 3,000 km³ in 2000. The increase accelerated after around 1950, particularly from the 1970s onward. Industrial consumption also climbed, from roughly 100 km³ at the start of the period to about 1,400 km³ by 2000. Domestic use remained the smallest category, increasing from around 50 km³ to roughly 500 km³.
The table shows that Brazil had a population of 176 million, compared with 5.2 million in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Brazil also had 26,500 km² of irrigated land, far exceeding the DRC’s 100 km². This contrast is reflected in per-person water consumption: 359 m³ in Brazil versus just 8 m³ in the DRC.
