Band 5.0

The given line graph and table provide data on regarding how much water was used in all over the world from 1900 to 2000 and in two countries. In general, a glance at the line graph reveals that water used in agriculture made up majority than in industrial and domestic use, however the table depicts a sharp difference between Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000. Worldwide, agricultural consumption rose from about 500 km³ in 1900 to 3,000 km³ in 2000, with faster growth after 1950. Industrial use also increased, from roughly 100 to 1,200 km³, while domestic use remained the smallest category, climbing from about 50 to 300 km³. In both countries, Brazil had much higher figures than Congo. Its population was 176 million, compared with 5.2 million in Congo. Brazil also had 26,500 km² of irrigated land, whereas Congo had only 100 km². The difference was similarly large in water use per person: 359 m³ in Brazil against just 8 m³ in Congo. Overall, water use rose in all sectors, but farming was consistently highest; Brazil exceeded Congo in each of the three measures shown.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Write a clear overview in two clauses: global use rises, and agriculture remains the largest sector; then note that Brazil exceeds Congo in the table.
2
Check every comparison for a complete structure, such as “X was higher than Y”, and include the relevant unit after figures.
3
Before submitting, review the opening specifically for article, preposition and punctuation problems; split sentences when introducing a contrast between the graph and table.
