The line graph illustrates three sectors in terms of the amount of water that they used in the world between 1900 and 2000, while the table gives information about water expenditure in two countries ( Brazil and Congo) in 2000. Units are measured in km³ and m³ respectively. Overall, the global water rose significantly in the period shown, with agriculture remaining the largest user throughout. Water use also increased in industry and homes, although both sectors used much less than agriculture by 2000. Brazil recorded higher figures than the Democratic Republic of Congo in all three categories shown in the table.
Agricultural water use rose from about 500 km³ in 1900 to approximately 3,000 km³ in 2000. The increase was gradual at first, then became steeper in the later decades. Industrial use also climbed, from roughly 100 km³ at the start to around 1,300 km³ by 2000, with much of its growth occurring after 1970. Domestic use followed a similar but smaller upward trend, reaching about 500 km³ at the end of the period.
In Brazil, the population was 176 million and 26,500 km² of land was irrigated; water consumption per person was 359 m³. By comparison, the Democratic Republic of Congo had a population of 5.2 million, only 100 km² of irrigated land and per-person consumption of 8 m³.
