Ideas to explore

  • Agriculture is the largest global water-use sector across the displayed period, rising to about 3,000 km³ by 2000.
  • Industrial and domestic use both increase over time, but remain below agricultural use; industry ends at roughly 1,400 km³ and domestic use at about 500 km³.
  • In 2000, Brazil exceeds the Democratic Republic of Congo in population, irrigated land and per-person water consumption; the per-person figures are 359 m³ and 8 m³ respectively.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the line graph and table, including their subject and time point.
  2. Give an overview of the dominant global sector and the main country contrast.
  3. Describe the global trend, comparing agriculture, industry and domestic use from the start to the end of the period.
  4. Summarise the table by comparing population, irrigated land and per-person consumption.

Band 9.0

The line chart illustrates the global water usage across three sectors: agriculture, industrial, and domestic. In addition, the table provides data on water needs specifically in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Overall, water usage from these three sectors has increased to varying extents over time. Notably, water consumption is significantly higher in Brazil than in the Democratic Republic of Congo on a per-person basis in 2000.

In the line chart, global agricultural use was highest throughout the period, rising from roughly 500 km³ in 1900 to about 3,000 km³ in 2000. It increased steadily at first, then grew more sharply from around the 1950s onward. Industrial and domestic use also rose, especially in the later decades, but remained much lower. By 2000, industrial use stood at approximately 1,300 km³, while domestic use was about 500 km³.

The table shows that Brazil had a population of 176 million, compared with 5.2 million in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Brazil also had far more irrigated land, at 26,500 km² versus 100 km². Its water consumption per person was 359 m³, whereas the corresponding figure for Congo was only 8 m³.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Make the overview name the dominant global pattern: agriculture is highest and rises most strongly across the period.
2
When describing the table, distinguish water consumption per person from total national water use; report the measure and unit explicitly.
3
Use parallel category labels throughout, such as “agriculture, industry and domestic use,” and vary repeated wording like “water usage.”
