Ideas to explore

  • Agriculture is the largest global water-use sector across the displayed period, rising to about 3,000 km³ by 2000.
  • Industrial and domestic use both increase over time, but remain below agricultural use; industry ends at roughly 1,400 km³ and domestic use at about 500 km³.
  • In 2000, Brazil exceeds the Democratic Republic of Congo in population, irrigated land and per-person water consumption; the per-person figures are 359 m³ and 8 m³ respectively.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the line graph and table, including their subject and time point.
  2. Give an overview of the dominant global sector and the main country contrast.
  3. Describe the global trend, comparing agriculture, industry and domestic use from the start to the end of the period.
  4. Summarise the table by comparing population, irrigated land and per-person consumption.

Band 5.0

The graphs present figures about the usage of water around the world and its consumption in Brazil and Congo, as well as irrigated land and population. As observed from the line graph, each of the three sectors had a rise in ten-years period, especially agriculture sector. Meanwhile, the table shows that the use of water in Brazil was much higher per person than in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Brazil also had a much larger population and irrigated area.

Overall, agriculture was by far the largest user of water worldwide throughout 1900 to 2000, and all three sectors increased, with growth accelerating toward the end. Brazil's per-person consumption and irrigated area were substantially higher than Congo's, and its population was also much larger.

In 1900, global agricultural use was about 500 km³, compared with roughly 100 km³ for industry and around 50 km³ for domestic purposes. By 2000, these figures had risen to approximately 3,000, 1,400 and 500 km³ respectively. Agricultural use rose steadily, then more sharply after 1970. Industrial use also climbed, particularly in the final decades, while domestic use increased more gradually.

Brazil's population was 176 million, compared with 5.2 million in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its irrigated land measured 26,500 km², far above Congo's 100 km². Water consumption per person was 359 m³ in Brazil, against only 8 m³ in Congo.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
State the key overview immediately after the introduction: agriculture is the largest category throughout, and all three forms of use rise.
2
Use approximate figures only where the graph supports them, then compare the scale of growth across agriculture, industry and domestic use.
3
Check each noun phrase in the preserved opening for articles and form, especially “a 100-year period” and “the agricultural sector.”
