The given charts elucidate disparities in the usage of fresh-water worldwide for three main sectors, along with the total consumption of water in two specific geographical territories, namely Brazil and Congo, in the year of 2000. A broad examination of data reveals that the amount of water used for family units, industrial zones, and cultivation had grown substantially over the century. Agriculture was consistently the largest user, rising from about 500 km³ in 1900 to roughly 3,000 km³ in 2000. Industrial use also increased, particularly after 1950, reaching approximately 1,400 km³ by 2000. Domestic consumption remained the smallest category throughout, although it climbed from a very low starting point to around 500 km³ at the end. Overall, growth in all three sectors became more pronounced in the latter decades.
The table shows a marked contrast between Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Brazil had a population of 176 million, compared with 5.2 million in Congo. Its area of irrigated land was also much larger, at 26,500 km², while the figure for Congo was only 100 km². Water consumption per person followed the same pattern: 359 m³ in Brazil, compared with 8 m³ in Congo. Thus, Brazil had higher figures in all three measures shown.
