Ideas to explore

  • Agriculture is the largest global water-use sector across the displayed period, rising to about 3,000 km³ by 2000.
  • Industrial and domestic use both increase over time, but remain below agricultural use; industry ends at roughly 1,400 km³ and domestic use at about 500 km³.
  • In 2000, Brazil exceeds the Democratic Republic of Congo in population, irrigated land and per-person water consumption; the per-person figures are 359 m³ and 8 m³ respectively.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the line graph and table, including their subject and time point.
  2. Give an overview of the dominant global sector and the main country contrast.
  3. Describe the global trend, comparing agriculture, industry and domestic use from the start to the end of the period.
  4. Summarise the table by comparing population, irrigated land and per-person consumption.

Band 7.0

The line chart and the table compare the data about the amount of water worldwide used by three sectors from 1990 to 2000 and water consumption in two counties namely Brazil and Congo in 2000. It is noticeable that the demand for usage of water worldwide increased in three sectors. In addition, agriculture accounted for the largest volume throughout the period, climbing from about 500 km³ in 1900 to 3,000 km³ in 2000. Industrial use also rose substantially, particularly after 1950, and reached approximately 1,400 km³ by the end. Domestic consumption increased more gradually, from a very low starting point to around 500 km³ in 2000. Thus, agriculture remained the biggest user, while homes used the least water in every year shown.

The table highlights a strong contrast between Brazil and Congo. Brazil had a population of 176 million, compared with just 5.2 million in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It also had far more irrigated land, at 26,500 km² versus 100 km². Water consumption per person was much higher in Brazil, at 359 m³, whereas the figure for Congo was only 8 m³. Overall, the table shows Brazil ahead on all three measures, especially individual water consumption and irrigated area.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Check the visual’s axes before drafting: describe the line chart as covering 1900–2000, and reserve 2000 for the table comparison.
2
Write a one-sentence overview that identifies agriculture as the largest user and notes that all three sectors increased; then give approximate start and end values.
3
Proofread the opening for precise country names, correct word forms such as “countries,” and spaces after full stops.
