Band 5.0

The line graph illustrates use of water in the world, while the table shows information about water consuming in Brazil and in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Overall, water use increased in all sectors. It is noticeable that using water for agricultural purposes was always the main feature with an astonishing rise during the given period. Agriculture rose from about 500 km³ in 1900 to 3,000 km³ in 2000, with particularly rapid growth after 1970. Industrial consumption also climbed, from roughly 100 km³ to around 1,400 km³, while domestic use remained the smallest category, increasing from about 50 to 500 km³. In all three sectors, the upward trend continued across the century, although the gap between agriculture and the other uses became wider.

The table compares Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000. Brazil had a population of 176 million, compared with just 5.2 million in Congo. It also had far more irrigated land, at 26,500 km² versus 100 km². Water consumption per person was much higher in Brazil, at 359 m³, while the figure for Congo was only 8 m³. Thus, Brazil led in each of the three measures shown, with the largest contrast in per-person water use.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace “water consuming” with “water consumption,” and check noun forms in phrases such as “information about …”.
2
Make the overview compare both visuals: mention the overall rise in global use and Brazil’s much higher figures than Congo’s.
3
Use approximate figures consistently and describe the trends neutrally, for example, “rose sharply” rather than “an astonishing rise.”
