Ideas to explore

  • Agriculture is the largest global water-use sector across the displayed period, rising to about 3,000 km³ by 2000.
  • Industrial and domestic use both increase over time, but remain below agricultural use; industry ends at roughly 1,400 km³ and domestic use at about 500 km³.
  • In 2000, Brazil exceeds the Democratic Republic of Congo in population, irrigated land and per-person water consumption; the per-person figures are 359 m³ and 8 m³ respectively.

Suggested structure

  1. Introduce the line graph and table, including their subject and time point.
  2. Give an overview of the dominant global sector and the main country contrast.
  3. Describe the global trend, comparing agriculture, industry and domestic use from the start to the end of the period.
  4. Summarise the table by comparing population, irrigated land and per-person consumption.

Band 7.0

There are different opinions among people about giving homework to children. While some opinions are strongly against the problem, I contend that homework plays an important role in education. There is no doubt that teachers should not give homework to their students. Firstly, homework is not a factor that changes the result of children’s learning. Turning to the charts, global water use for all three purposes rose between 1900 and 2000. Agriculture was consistently the largest user, increasing from about 500 km³ to 3,000 km³, with particularly rapid growth after 1970. Industrial use also rose, from roughly 100 km³ to around 1,500 km³, while domestic use remained the smallest category, climbing from about 50 to 500 km³. The table shows marked differences between Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000. Brazil had a population of 176 million, compared with 5.2 million in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Brazil also had 26,500 km² of irrigated land, far more than Congo’s 100 km². Its water consumption per person was 359 m³, whereas the corresponding figure for Congo was only 8 m³. Overall, agriculture dominated worldwide water use, and Brazil’s irrigated land and per-person consumption were much greater than Congo’s.

Targeted Improvement Tips

1
Replace the homework introduction with one sentence paraphrasing the charts’ focus: global water use by sector and the Brazil–Congo comparison in 2000.
2
Write an overview that identifies agriculture as the largest global water-use sector and notes Brazil’s much higher irrigated area and per-person consumption.
3
Check that every comparison refers to the correct measure and unit: km³ for global sector use, km² for irrigated land, and m³ per person.
